Cor(p)o Metropolitano (Metropolitan Choir/Body)

In the year in which Portugal celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Revolution held on 25 April 1974, the Metropolitan Choir/Body comes to Porto, to the Coliseu Porto Ageas, to perform “April in September”, a show based on its own repertoire and on April songs.

The Metropolitan Choir/Body‘s new creation for this 2024 edition begins at the Coliseu Porto Ageas at 17:00, but it then comes out to the street, evoking the memories of 25 April 1974, ending with a performance at the Church of Santo Ildefonso, in Praça da Batalha.

Before that, at 11:00, in the surrounding area and from a mobile broadcasting station, the Porto Metropolitan Radio will be providing a broadcast specially developed in the context of the creation of this show. This is an integral and fundamental part of the performance, which takes place between 11:00 and 17:00, at which point the broadcast will give way to the live broadcast of the show itself, taking place in the Coliseu.

In what is already the 4th edition of the Metropolitan Choir/Body and following new open calls for participation, the Metropolitan Choir/Body returned to rehearsals in April this year to prepare a show that, based on the songs of the Revolution, but also on the Choir’s own original repertoire, celebrates the month of Freedom in September.

Inspired by the principles of the Metropolitan Charter for Culture 2023-2028 and part of the MATER 17 initiative promoted by the Porto Metropolitan Area, this project continues to open space in each municipality and in the metropolitan sphere for collaborative work between all those who want to be part of it: city council members and officers, cultural agents and members of each community.

The Metropolitan Choir/Body began in 2021 as a social and cultural construction project associated with artistic and musical practice, of a collaborative nature, through networking capable of promoting the sense of identity and belonging of the Porto Metropolitan Area based on the involvement of its communities, presenting the result of 17 unique artistic residencies dedicated to a collective look at the material and immaterial heritage of the 17 municipalities that comprise it.

In 2022 the Metropolitan Choir/Body performed in Espinho, bringing together for the first time and on the same stage all the voices that made up the choir, in a travelling show about the vast territory of the Porto Metropolitan Area, crossing paths that go from the mountains to the sea.

In 2023, the Metropolitan Choir/Body took a new collaborative creation to the Municipality of Paredes, presenting a show inspired by the human body and a reflection on a creative process made up of hundreds of voices.
